50 Years of Toronto Basketball History | Hoops Talk Nation Podcast

It’s Canada Day here north of the border and as we celebrate my home country’s 150th birthday, I thought this would make for the perfect opportunity to share a recent interview I conducted with a good buddy of mine Lance Winn.
Lance is in the sports broadcasting business and much like myself grew up in Toronto loving the game of basketball.  It’s important to understand that in the early days of the sport, it’s popularity was nowhere what it is today.  There definitely were pockets scattered throughout the city where people gathered to play or watch and because camera phones didn’t exist, if you missed the action all you had to rely on was the stories of those who witnessed it first hand.
I talk to Lance about a DVD series that he produced called, “Hang Time: 50 Years of Toronto Basketball” which tells the story of these games that so many of us weren’t on hand to see for ourselves.  It reintroduces the legends and stories behind the rise of the city’s most popular sport, bringing together generations of Toronto’s basketball community to celebrate and appreciate those who paved the way for today’s successes. It was a great convo and an absolute pleasure to spend some time chatting about an era of basketball that served as a spark to a game that has captured a nation.

Checking In on the Toronto Raptors with Duane Watson | Hoops Talk Nation

While the idea of the Toronto Raptors topping last season’s magical run that ended at the hands of  LeBron James and his championship Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals is questionable, there`s a fair amount of intrigue headed into the 2016-2017 campaign to suggest that getting back to the big dance can be a very real possibility.tag lineWith many unanswered questions on my mind, I reached out to my hoops writer pal and all around good guy, Duane Watson to explore the possibilities with that exist for our hometown Raptors for the upcoming campaign.

At the end of it all, we walked away with two distinct thoughts around why the success of last can be replicated:

  1. the youthful core of DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry, Jonas Valanciunas, Cory Joseph, Terrence Ross, Norman Powell and Patrick Patterson are all in tact and presumably have a bit more seasoned with last year`s extended playoff run under their belts.
  2. Having so many returning faces also means that the chemistry issues that may plague other Eastern conference squads who made significant personnel moves like Chicago, New York, Indiana, Boston and Atlanta won`t be a concern for the Raps who were cohesive as super glue.

It was a great convo that definitely offered some viewpoints to challenge your thinking if you were doubting the Raptors chances of keeping up, if definitely made Duane and I believers!

Last Season for Former Boston Celtic, Paul Pierce | Hoops Talk Nation

Paul Pierce made headlines on NBA media day  when the 18 year vet announced that the 2016-2017 season would be his last one as he intends on retiring from the game of basketball.  The news would come days after former Boston Celtic, teammate Kevin Garnett made it public that his career was also over as well.   Pierce, who won a championship in Boston with Garnett, will finish his career in his hometown with a Los Angeles Clippers squad expected to be one of the Western Conference’s best teams which will possibly give him an opportunity with a chance to chase a title in his final year.

The Truth would have played 19 seasons in the NBA with a substantial chunk in Boston where Garnett joined him along with Ray Allen to capture a title in 2008. Kevin and Paul would eventually move on to play together in Brooklyn for two seasons before Pierce decided to finish his career in his hometown of LA and play for the Clippers.

Considering the impact that both players had on the Boston franchise, it only made sense that Nick Gelso from CLNS Radio join the Hoops Talk Nation podcast to reflect on the careers of Pierce and KG.
